Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy, which usually occurs when the baby is still in the mother's womb or occurs shortly after birth, is a disorder that occurs as a result of permanent damage to the brain tissue and manifests itself with a decrease in the ability to move. It is a comprehensive term that includes neurological disorders of the brain. Cerebral palsy is a disease that occurs as a result of permanent damage to the brain tissue and progresses with a decrease in the ability to move. Injuries in the affected brain region may cause different symptoms in each child patient, depending on the situation. While one of the most common findings in cerebral cp patients is spasticity, this situation limits the body's movement and posture ability. Cerebral palsy is one of the most common causes of disability in childhood. If babies cry a lot for no reason, their hands are held with their thumbs in the palms and they do not open, if there is asymmetry in arm and leg movements, a pediatric neurology department should be consulted as soon as possible.

Individuals with cerebral palsy may encounter swallowing problems and may have difficulty focusing their eyes towards an object, usually due to a balance problem in their eye muscles. Due to the stiffness that occurs as a result of the contractions in the muscles, the patient's body may have decreased mobility in various joints.

While some of our patients can perform their routine activities in individuals with cerebral palsy, this may not be possible in some patients. Other concomitant conditions may include blindness, deafness, or epilepsy.

In CP patients, botulinum toxin and serial castings are applied to the muscles with spasticity by a pediatric orthopedist, and in older children, if structural disorders occur in the musculoskeletal system, surgical procedures are performed. Regular physical therapy for CP patients is the key to success. Physical therapy should be applied at least in the first two years, it is one of the best methods especially for children with physical difficulties. It is necessary to work with physiotherapists to ensure the body's arm, leg, head and trunk control, and to improve physical abilities such as walking, sitting, eating and drinking. Botox treatment is one of the recommended treatment methods in patients with excessive stiffness in their muscles. Botox treatment can be preferred to relieve discomfort and prevent patients from being in a difficult situation during physical therapy. There is no known drug treatment in cerebral palsy, but some drugs can be supplemented to prevent muscle stiffness in tremor and epilepsy.
